Trevor Reed, the former US Marine who was wrongfully detained in Russia for nearly three years before being released in a prisoner swap, was injured while fighting in Ukraine, a source familiar with the matter told CNN Tuesday.
Reed, who was freed in a prisoner swap in April 2022, was transported to a hospital in Kyiv and was evacuated to Germany for medical care, the source said.
The circumstances around Reed’s injury in combat were not immediately clear.
“We are aware that Trevor Reed was injured while participating in fighting in Ukraine,” State Department principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said at a briefing Tuesday, adding that Reed was evacuated to Germany with the support of an unnamed NGO.

As part of a prisoner exchange with the US for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian smuggler convicted of conspiring to import cocaine, Reed was freed from Russia in late April. The US commuted Yaroshenko’s sentence.
At least the US is looking after active duty personnel, it appears.
So, Britney Griner was exchanged for an international arms dealer and a US Marine was exchanged for a cocaine dealer.
The arms dealer is probably helping Russia or Ukraine or both and the cocaine dealer is helping Hunter.
It’s nice to be the king.
Was Hunter a customer?
How many “former” U.S. military personnel are on the ground fighting in Ukraine? Is this a way for them to avoid having to tell Americans that there are boots on the ground?
“former” US Marine...
So, does this mean there was more to his previous visit and arrest in Russia?
Following a party in May 2019, Reed became extremely drunk to the point that some friends and his girlfriend, Alina Tsybulnik, decided to leave so Reed could recover.
After calling the police because they assumed a drunk tank would be safe, two officers took Reed and told Tsybulnik he could be retrieved shortly.
Upon her arrival, however, she found Reed's face to be bruised and FSB officers there to interview him.
Reed was charged under part 2 of article 318 of Russia's Criminal Code, which refers to violence committed against Russian officers.
According to Russian authorities, while being driven to a police station, Reed grabbed for the officer driving causing the car to swerve about uncontrollably.
“Dude, you’re hammered. Let’s get help from the police.”
Said no dude in history ever…
Sounds like maybe he wasn’t “wrongfully detained” in the first instance.
Life is tough. Its tougher if you’re stupid.
“former” Marine
Read between the lines, this guy sounds like a nut
But he’s getting TLC from the Biden DoD
Nor his Russian date
Apparently he was injured via IED.
It’s a ridiculous story.
I suppose that's as good cover as any to use. It's not like the Bribery administration is ready to admit to boots on the ground.
Retired, not former.
“How many “former” U.S. military personnel are on the ground fighting in Ukraine? Is this a way for them to avoid having to tell Americans that there are boots on the ground?”
Seems that way - they ‘retire’ from the military (before they can buy a beer), and then are ‘re-hired’ after serving their tour in Ukraine, ahem, I mean ‘visiting Europe’.
There are just so many examples of this in the news that it must be fairly widespread but no investigations into what is actually going on. How are they motivating these soldiers to participate in WWI style trench warfare in Ukraine?
