Improving ballot access is the focus of new legislation introduced by a Maine congressman.
The Freedom to Vote Act has been introduced by U.S. Sen. Angus King Jr., I-Maine.
The legislation, if enacted, would set basic national standards regarding voting rights.
...
If enacted, the law would be automatic and online voter registration, make Election Day a public holiday, ensure uniform early voting, and same-day voter registration. According to a release, it would also establish federal minimum standards on vote by mail and drop boxes.
According to a release, the bill would also prevent state election subversion by establishing federal protections and protecting election records, infrastructure, and tabulation.
The bill would also establish nonpartisan redistricting reform and ban gerrymandering by requiring states to follow a specific set of criteria for congressional redistricting.

Election day to be April 15th, and your ballot is your income tax return on the front page of your 1040. Signature required.
Good point. I really wish Republicans would counter these insane Democrat bills with the exact opposite legislation.
Here’s three of what I’d like to see:
1. Only funds from within the district/state can be used in that district.
2. Any and all businesses are prohibited from donating if they receive ANY federal money.
3. All funds leftover after an election are used toward the national debt (federal elections) or state debt (state elections).
It’s not perfect but it’s a start.
The bill would give aid and comfort to the domestic and foreign enemies of the United States.
Should also set the salaries of elected officials as the median income of the district they represent. Perhaps that would be an incentive to actually improve things within their district.
That's a rather subjective goal, don't you think?
Unconstitutional on it’s very face.
Yes. But that never stopped the Marxists before.
I do as I please! And you do as I say! is their motto.
And, ironically (in a tragic sense) they cover their tracks and intentions by lecturing us about "preserving our democracy".
That would happen only if there was truly an opposition party.
There isn’t.
Well, I am wishing.
- Automatic voter registration - Oh h3ll NO !!
- - No voter registration except at city hall
- Online voter registration - OK if:
- - Address is a verifiable private mail stop (no vacant lots, construction sites, etc)
- - verifiable gubmint issued ID
- Make Election Day a public holiday - OK
- Ensure uniform early voting - OK
- - 10 days is plenty.
- - No voting/ballots after voting day.
- Same-day voter registration - NO
- vote by mail - out of country USA citizens and the verifiably disabled only. If online registration for a mailed ballot is allowed, the registration is only good until the end of the current calendar year.
- Drop boxes - another Oh h3ll NO.
h3ll no!! to the entire freaking bill.
Election operations are up to states to administer as they see fit, not the federal government.
How about you can vote when you pay annual property taxes on your home.
“establishing Federal”
Let me correct your grammar. “Expanding Federal control of Federal, State and Local Elections”.
HAVA in 2001 greatly expanded Federal control of elections by giving FREE MONEY to local election officials to contract with HAVA approved IT hardware and software contractors.
