Some of those Russians may have found a way around a general prejudice against anything Russian, simply by saying they were Ukrainian. The farther one gets from the actual conflict, the fewer people can tell the difference.

Yep, I sure cannot tell the difference, despite being on Putin’s Payroll (LOL). But seriously, I suspect that only people who understand one or both languages has any chance of telling the difference.
That’s like the Americans during The Gulf War who would say they were Canadians when they travelled abroad.
