Cops shoot two bystanders while killing New Mexico knifeman who stabbed Good Samaritan

Shocking new video footage shows the moment New Mexico police officers shot two bystanders while taking down a 25-year-old man who stabbed a Good Samaritan in the neck after being offered a free meal last month.

Officers Brenda Johnson, Eric Wilensky, Violet Baca and Christian Cordova fatally shot Jeramiah Salyards, 25, while also shooting two unnamed bystanders - striking one victim at least four times, causing serious injuries.

[snip]

At one point, Salyards appeared to try to stand up while police fired another two gunshots at him, leading him to collapse on the sidewalk.

Following the shooting, one officer mistakenly tries to arrest one of the victims while another intervenes.

Salyards died of his injuries. One of the bystanders hit by officers' gunfire was struck in the knee and was treated and released that night from the hospital.

The bystander in the blue jacket was shot several times and suffered critical injuries. He was hospitalized for several weeks following the shooting and it currently still at the hospital going through rehabilitation.

The police shooting occurred on June 29, at about 9:30 pm, after Albuquerque officers responded to a 911 call of stabbing at a McDonald's. Bodycam footage of the incident has just been released.

I think they were truly innocent bystanders.

I had to ask. Lord knows there's no shortage of videos out there where the "bystanders" are actively interfering with the police trying to make an arrest.

Watched the video, I counted 22 rounds being fired and the officers were shooting from multiple directions. My guess is that they will determine he was shot by more than one of these bad cops.

The officers were in no danger from the knife. The innocent bystander was clearly the most endangered but was he in more danger from the guy with the knife or from the crazy gunfire from the officers. I would say the gunfire was worse.

Here is the other important part of the article:

“ Salyards was recently released from prison for stabbing a city bus driver in 2020. He spent three years in prison after being convicted of the crime and was released in May, prior to the attack. ”

3 years for stabbing someone? Who could have seen this coming?

These cops are poorly trained and unpracticed in discipline.

There was no need to maintain that much distance in this circumstance.

Once the perp is down, the 'closing distance' shrinks, and should be used to the cops advantage.

The continued shots without care for accuracy or risk beyond the target, are reckless.

Since the cops have “Qualified Immunity”, the innocent bystanders are screwed. I hope they have good insurance.

The guy had a knife. Get closer.

The cops who hit the innocent so many times tells me they were actually malicious with their shooting.

I get that a suspect armed with a gun is a huge danger. But this guy was armed with a knife. It would seem to me that once he was down, a beanbag shotgun should have been deployed.

But the wild gunfire continued. I’m actually surprised the innocent guy on the left wasn’t shot to death.

Could have been prevented from being able to stab this victim——BUT we keep ‘letting them out’.

One of the things always drilled into us was the adage:
(ability , opportunity, jeopardy.)

Did the suspect have the ability to hurt someone. Well, Yes, he had a knife on him.
Opportunity, He might have the opportunity to hurt them or the other people he was near. So it’s important to get any weapons away from him.
Jeopardy, The only one in immediate danger was the man next to him. Did they try to protect that man ? Did they identify
if he was a threat ?
Were the Officers in danger from the Knife, at that distance?
Did the Officers take steps to insure innocents were not in the line of fire ?
And did the Officers stop shooting when the threat was neutralized ?

They screwed up, big time and should be terminated for the terrible shooting and their threat to the public.

According to Dr. Clarissa Cole fully half the candidates who flat out failed her psych eval were hired anyway.

In the military, the rule is we don’t engage the enemy unless we have at least a 3:1 ratio of our forces to their forces. So I guess you believe the military is also a bunch of “feminized assholes.”

My biggest concern in a shootout is the ...... uh, “passthrus”. A bullet going thru the criminal and hitting my while I’m doing my best to hide behind a lamppost. Mebbe coppers need to use bullets like air marshals do.

As recently as 15 years ago, the Albuquerque police used to be the gold standard for police marksmanship and taking down legitimate bad guys. Before the Middle East wars. The navy even sent seals to go train with them. Then the local press and democrats started some silly body count. They kept score how many bad guys shot vs how many officers wounded. The ratio showed the cops were unfair.
They took away officers used of personal pistols, then they started requiring college degrees. Then they vastly expanded internal affairs where they literally have one IA guy for each field officer. Then they started aggressively pushing for females, gays, minorities and people with a therapeutic mentality. The city asked the DOJ to appoint a Federal master who approves all training… and he carefully looks at all of it for anything that seems even slightly aggressive.
They hired chiefs from woke cities around the country, including one who didn’t even bother with getting certified as a cop in NM. They just called him a chief of staff.

And you wind up with 4 woke cops including two women lighting up a guy with a knife and hitting two bystanders in the barrage.

It’s an embarrassment to people who know how APD was before woke.

In New Mexico cops do not have qualified immunity… at all.
