US to give Ukraine new $400 million military aid package

The United States plans to announce as soon as Tuesday a new military aid package for Ukraine worth up to $400 million, primarily comprised of artillery, air defense missiles and ground vehicles as Ukraine's counteroffensive grinds on, three U.S. officials said on Friday.

The U.S. is not including cluster munitions in this weapons assistance package, two of the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said. The U.S. first sent dual-purpose improved conventional munitions (DPICM) - a cluster munition fired from a 155 millimeter Howitzer cannon to Ukraine earlier in July.

Included in the package are several Stryker armored personnel carriers, mine clearing equipment, munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), munitions for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), anti-tank weapons including TOW and Javelin and munitions for Patriot and Stinger anti-aircraft systems, according to the officials.

The package was still being finalized and could change.

How many times do you have to be told that cluster bombs are not a war crime?

“Is using them a war crime?
The use of cluster bombs itself does not violate international law, but using them against civilians can be a violation. As in any strike, determining a war crime requires looking at whether the target was legitimate and if precautions were taken to avoid civilian casualties.”

“The part of international law where this starts playing [a role], though, is indiscriminate attacks targeting civilians,” Human Rights Watch’s associate arms director Mark Hiznay told The Associated Press news agency. “So that’s not necessarily related to the weapons, but the way the weapons are used.”

From the article it is mostly ammo. I don’t see how politicians can skim 75% off the top when the package is ammo. What are they going to do with it?

A measly ten billion bought largess beyond Zelinsky’s wildest dreams. Perhaps now he can get out of those Castroite rags and dress like the mountebank he truly is.

You have vastly larger domestic spending categories you can look at. I don’t know why you guys obssess so much over a minor expense in the context of the cosmically overgrown federal system.

Two things. First, I’m not “you guys”. I’m an individual. Second, I completely agree with your comment about the domestic categories, but they are not the subject of this thread. I’m not going to complain about welfare spending in a Ukraine thread. One thing at a time.
