Protection by the police is one thing ...
You raise a valid point, however the police are not protecting their right to protest nor to hold radical views; here the police are giving them protection that allows them to stop other citizens from going about their lawful business. Without that police protection, the lawful citizens would soon sideline the protestors.

Police are protecting them while they break the law. If they were protesting in favor of oil, they would be arrested.
