As the southwestern United States endures an oppressive heat wave that has produced triple-digit temperatures in many areas this week, experts say records could soon fall.
Among them: the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth.
The National Weather Service is forecasting a high temperature of 130 to 132 degrees in California’s Death Valley on Sunday.
If that occurs, it would “either tie or break [the] record for the hottest temperature reliably measured on Earth,” says Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

I have experienced three weeks with highs at 110 F, or above.
That was Summer in late July/August in Mojave Desert.
We are not near that this year.
Oh no. We’re all gonna die again.
We are coming out of a mini ice age and the end of the Pleistocene ice ages. We have had a general warming trend since then (thank God), and are seeing the benefits of it. Now the idiots in charge think they can do a better job of engineering than God Himself. Good luck with that! NO, BAD LUCK with that! BTW, how were they measuring those temperatures 500 years ago? 300 years ago? And who was monitoring on a world wide basis? What unmitigated BS this is.
The same has been true for Arizona. Last two months about 50% of the days have been below normal.
I’ll go give my wife a reason for hope and go wake her up to tell her the apocalypse she has been waiting for has finally arrived. It will be the first thing she will be excited about since hell froze over.
It reports all temperatures over the Earth in realtime and averages them instantly?
= = =
Just how are they calculating this?
Averaging major cities? Sampling each equal area in a grid covering the whole Earth? I think not.
OH, AI is doing it! I am wrong.
We have a store in town advertising “Coldest Beer in Town”.
I wonder how they can say that.
If it were me, I would have a can in the freezer at 0 deg. F.
That would be the coldest beer in town.
Reverse that scheme for the hottest day on earth.
HVAC down and forecast indicates 104 Sat and Sun. Survivable. -20 degrees is a lot more serious. 😬
Pacific Northwest has been consistently below normal this year. (5+ degrees)
My mother is complaining about lack of heat for her tomatoes.
It’s sunny, but the air is just colder
I’m going to set my copper pennies out in a bread loaf pan so’s I end up with a copper bar.
The Earth has a fever! The oceans will soon be boiling hot! The center of the Earth is millions of degrees!
“since they have been keeping records”
Yes, we don’t know how far back they’re going.
Also, I’ve heard that older temperatures have been “corrected” to compensate for blah blah blah.
I don’t know whether earth’s temperature is increasing, and if so what it’s due to, and I’m not worried.
Not this again….🤦🏻♂️
EVER in the last 100 years. Millions of years have passed with higher temps.
Key words. ON RECORD.
Me too! It’s summertime and it’s gonna be hotter yet in the Mojave Desert! So... In all the decades that I’ve lived on this planet, I actually think that the recent weather’s been cooler than in past decades!
{I’m old enough to remember when these temps were normal!}
I was thinking the same. It hasn’t been that long since we had a summer with temps so high the rabbit died. 110 degrees in VA.
“the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth.”
In the last 200 years.
How long has the earth been around?
5.56mm
