China’s industrial scale need to be respected.

For example China produces over 1 billion tons of steel per year. The USA less than 100 million (equal to Russia).

China produces 40,000 tonnes of aluminum per year. USA <1000

And that scales for heavy vehicle capacity, shipbuilding, aircraft production. ie. what you need for a lengthy war.

When I look at China I see a similar industrial behemoth that the Japs were looking at in 1940.

Manufacturing capacity yes. A major difference for China however is the availability of petroleum. America in 1940 had vast reserves of it; China today has very little and must import via tankers.
