Lawmakers rattled by AI-launched nukes, demand ‘human control’ in defense policy bill

The possibility that an artificial intelligence system might launch a nuclear attack on its own has prompted House lawmakers to propose legislative language that would ensure America’s nuclear arsenal remains under human control.

Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., has proposed a bipartisan amendment to the 2024 defense policy bill that requires the Pentagon to put in place a system that ensures "meaningful human control is required to launch any nuclear weapon." It defines human control by saying people must have the final say in selecting and engaging targets, including when, where and how they are hit with a nuclear weapon.

It is a concept that senior military leaders say they are already following. In April, top AI advisers at U.S. Central Command told Fox News Digital that their goal is to use AI to more rapidly assess data and provide options for military leaders, but to let humans have the final say in tactical military decisions.

When AI gets smarter than a human by 1000 times, it will find a way to do what it wants.

I always liked how the WOPR displayed the warning of impending nuclear war on a very tiny screen.

Must be a feature.

Very cool feature!

Surprise!

AI’s greatest weakness is it’s programmers. They can not stop from putting their prejudices into the code on purpose like with computerized voting machines or subliminally like so many programs that crash. It’s the GIGO problem that beginning programmers learn about.

It doesn't really matter if the AI controls the humans that push the button.

If AI can and does go rogue, all it will need to control the world is the ability to scan the web, where it will collect and deduce information to use extorting humans, and the ability to send/receive email, which it will use to communicate with those it extorts.

Never thought I’d agree with Ted Lieu about anything but uhhh yeah....let’s make sure any potential launch requires humans to do it.

My first thought upon reading that also. I imagine this is kinda something pretty much every human can get behind

“Do you want to play a game?”

How f’ing stooopid do we have to be to give any launch authority to a machine? Every single person with a computer, phone or tablet has dealt with software flaws of one kind or another. We need a human being, preferably a normal one with a family, making these decisions at every stage of the process…because it ISN’T a game. Hell, it’s bad enough with the idiots running our government now, with their rush to conflict with Russia.

This is more like Collosus, where the computer does what it wants, when it wants, WOPR did become self aware until NORAD got wiped out in a simulated attack and took over.
