The land was largely traded and paid for. Some was taken by force. Some was won by wars. Some was because another republic decided to join.
Show me one country in the history of the world that hasn’t had slaves, indentured servants, had other folks move in, traded for land, bought land, taken some land by force, won land in wars. Some of these places STILL HAVE SLAVERY for jimminy’s sake.
