I can see a lot of benefits for him skipping the first one. Let’s see if (without Trump on the stage) if they run against Joe Biden or if they run against Donald Trump (who’s not even present). That would tell us a lot.
And like you said, will they have anything else to say if Trump is not the subject? Either way, let them see how boring they are without Trump.
If he does skip it he should keep them hanging with a decision until almost airtime. But he should NOT go on live with some event at the same time slot. Give Americans a chance to see how boring the GOP debate and candidates are without Donald Trump on the stage.
