Wealthy donors have long funded think tanks with official-sounding names that produce research that reflects the interests of those funders... a recent report from the Quincy Institute demonstrates just how much influence war profiteers have on the national discourse.
The Quincy Institute—whose own start-up funding came mainly from George Soros and Charles Koch—looked at 11 months of Ukraine War coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, from March 1, 2022, through January 31, 2023, and counted each time one of 33 leading think tanks was mentioned. Of the 15 think tanks most often mentioned in the coverage, only one—Human Rights Watch—does not take funding from Pentagon contractors. Quincy’s analysis found that the media were seven times more likely to cite think tanks with war industry ties than they were to cite think tanks without war industry ties.

One critical way that corporate news media manufactures consent for US foreign policy is by carefully selecting the sources and voices that they present, and narrowing the spectrum of debate.

The problem is competing narratives. If you hold a view, say your view is X and someone else has Y and someone else has H and these views are mutually exclusive, then you’d better lobby hard or your view vanishes. The answer to global warming, if it exists, is almost certainly nuclear power. But the people holding that view were few and got shouted off the stage. Nuclear power is effectively dead as a solution for anything. It was probably shouted down by “big oil,” the green lobby and enemies of the west. If you want a strong defense, even the poorest thinker on the subject must be aware now that you can’t just build it up to a deterrent value in a year, or two, or three. You have to be inventing, producing, deploying all the time. Not just when you see the need. If you suddenly see the need and you haven’t been working on it all along, be prepared to learn your enemy’s language. My point is, we all need to be informed enough about every X, Y and H that we can make our own rational decisions and elect representatives who will make those decisions reality.
There are many on this site that applaud these think tanks for making the effort to “curate” the information people are exposed to.
Because they like the outcome.
Good post, thank you.
Boy Howdy!
And in another shocking revelation, Water is wet.
These NGOs do a lot more than this. They are the “community organizers” for various leftist movements. They lobby foreign governments and tell academia the new narratives they should teach.
Hungary has banned every foreign NGO because they are subversive to Hungarian people and culture.
These NGOs have undermined our society and culture. They are behind every leftist movement of the late 20th and early 21st century.
....and while scum like Soros fund them, most of them get plenty of gov’t funding from the US taxpayers or foreign governments.
Brookings was a See Eye Ay swamp back when I was a consultant for it.
FAIR is the national progressive media watchdog group, challenging corporate media bias, spin and misinformation. We work to invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater diversity in the press and by scrutinizing media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints. We expose neglected news stories and defend working journalists when they are muzzled. As a progressive group, we believe that structural reform is ultimately needed to break up the dominant media conglomerates, establish independent public broadcasting and promote strong non-profit sources of information.
I bet Andy has a nice pink t-shirt they wear every time they go to a sit in with their Code Pink sisters.

I don't look good in pink. And of course you are aware that your ad hominum against the poster does nothing to defeat the thesis that the strategic analysis think tanks are in the tank for big war.
It's just more data to make the point.
To bad you have nothing useful to say. But do have a nice day.
The Carnegie Endowment has for years been a home for former State Department leftists.
Worth reminding that you, the taxpayer, are funding at least 1/4 of the revenue of these “non-profit” organizations.
