Vietnam has banned Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated film “Barbie” from domestic distribution over a scene featuring a map that shows China’s unilaterally claimed territory in the South China Sea, state media reported on Monday. (Warner Bros’, like CNN, is a unit of Warner Bros. Discovery.)
The U-shaped “nine-dash line” is used on Chinese maps to illustrate its claims over vast areas of the South China Sea, including swathes of what Vietnam considers its continental shelf, where it has awarded oil concessions.
“Barbie” is the latest movie to be banned in Vietnam for depicting China’s controversial nine-dash line, which was repudiated in an international arbitration ruling by a court in The Hague in 2016. China refuses to recognize the ruling.

Remember that huge, drawn out build up to Anchorman from 2013? By the time it finally premiered, most people were sick to death of hearing about it. It made a soft profit, but Anchorman didn’t cost nearly as much as Barbie to make.
“I just auto-presumed they will pick a drag/trans for Barbie”
Maybe in the sequel.
Leave it to lunatic left hollywood to do China’s bidding.
Yes, these guys don’t even try to hide it do they.
Well not exactly. They kissed up to the Nazis during the Stalin’s non-aggression pact with Hitler, pushing American isolationism. Stalin wanted Hitler and the remainder of western Europe to fight until one side was destroyed and the other exhausted. But that didn’t work as planned as Hitler then attacked Russia. When that happened Hollywood and the American communist party generally, turned on a dime and went all-in against Naziism.
I’ll give you that there were also some prominent non-communists who had business ties with Germany and or were enamored with how well the economy in Germany was doing (while we were still in the Depression until we entered the war), in the 30s, such as Lindbergh, big banks, car companies, IBM, etc.
Movies aren't about entertainment, they're about pushing a viewpoint.
It should be banned for being too pink
“You mean you aren’t going to go see “Barbie” in the theater?”
margot robbies’ hot, but she ain’t THAT hot. 😁
As an artist and amateur film maker, I think this is gonna be a fun movie to watch. I would have loved to have been on the set for its filming.
I there a reason this movie was even produced? Who is the target audience? Sounds like some producer had too much time and money on their hands...
I wonder if they love China as much as their predecessors loved USSR back in Joe McCarthy's day. Probably more since there's bigger business with the chicoms.
I want to see that one and Sound of Freedom.
I used to love it in my youth when a new Indiana Jones movie was coming out, but I’m not remotely interested in seeing the current one. Indy wasn’t woke when I saw those early movies.
If you look at the actual screenshot from the film, it is 8 dashes, not 9
