I did see a Ukrainian video of Ukrainian soldiers shooting Russian POW's in the back of the head after ordering them to lie face down on the ground.

Good article. I can almost understand the appeal nazism seems to have in Northern Europe where you still have the Kalergi plan and people like Barbara Spector, but I do not see any such excuse for hohos. Many if not most of them are just really that messed up.

I'd say that if a major religion, or a substantial faction of one, sought to undermine long-standing Christian doctrine, then it could be considered to be promoting "Potemkin Chrisitanity."

Therefore any physical church such an anti-Christian ideology is being preached or promoted from could be accurately called a "Potemkin" church or cathedral.

This piece, like much of what passes for history in opinion pieces, takes isolated facts and drops them like rotten onions into a thick base of overcooked opinion with little regard for context, proportion, or even basic sense. Worst of all, the essential premise of the article is that Ukraine deserves to get raped by Russia because, well, Ukraine has a “Nazi problem.” Yet the key intel agencies in Poland, Germany, and Israel — all of whom know about Nazis — have concluded that the supposed Ukrainian “Nazi problem> is not really a problem.

Yes, all wars do produce volumes of propaganda, and this article is an example of that. The charge that the Ukrainians are Nazis is quite common with pro-Russian apologists. But what is a Nazi? Nazism is a particular political ideology that arose in Germany in the 1920's and '30's. "Nazi" is an abbreviation for National Socialism. Like all forms of socialism, it seeks the benefit for the group over others rather than justice between individuals. What distinguishes Nazism from other forms of socialism is the identity of the group to be benefited. In this case it is the German volk. This lead them to seek to eliminate what they perceived as the threat from the Jews and to seek to conquer and subjugate the slavic nations, all for the benefit of the German volk.

Are those characterized as Nazis in Ukraine truly Nazis? The author himself answers this question:

To this day, with all that is known about Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany, many Ukrainians still view the Nazis as liberators.

The Ukrainians who are using Nazi symbols are not advocating the eliminations of the Jews or the conquest and subjugation of other ethnic groups. Rather, they are using the symbols of the Nazis to demonstrate their opposition to Russian subjugation. Their crime, then, is not that they are advocating Nazism but that they are using Nazi symbols. This may be offensive but it does not make them actual Nazis.

Because of their local history, Nazi symbols in Ukraine have taken on another meaning beyond the Nazi ideology. We can see a similar use of the symbols of the Confederacy. Should we declare that everyone who flys a Confederate flag or has worn a Confederate uniform is a supporter of the race slavery of blacks?

As for events in Odessa in May of 2014, the actual events are not as simple as the author has portrayed them. Violence broke out between pro-Maidan and pro-Russian separatist protesters on when the United Ukraine rally was attacked by the pro-Russian separatists. During this violence the pro-Russian separatists barricaded themselves in the Trade Union House. They were not "rounded up." Shots were fired by both sides, and the pro-Ukraine demonstrators attempted to storm the building, which caught fire as the two groups threw petrol bombs at each other. But this does not stop the Russians and their pro-Russian allies from characterizing this as a deliberate act of genocide against peaceful Russian residents of the city.

It should also be noted that the ones who cry the loudest about Ukrainian "Nazis" are silent about the official use of Soviet symbols by the Russians, a regime just as evil as the Nazis. This harping on the use of Nazi symbols by small number of Ukrainians is nothing but an attempt to delegitimize the Ukrainian self-defense against a Russian invasion, the ones who are actually attempting to subjugate another ethic group for the benefit of their own ethnic group; in other word, the true Nazis.
