Republican presidential candidates' travel mapped
Axios ^ | July 1, 2023 | Alex Thompson

Former President Trump is not campaigning at the pace of previous cycles, preferring to spend most of his days at Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster rather than grip-and-grinning in Iowa and other early primary states.

The big picture: Trump — who enjoys a big lead despite his 2024 rivals doing far more campaign events — has held only one of his signature rallies this year, with his second coming this weekend in South Carolina.

KEYWORDS: 2024; desantis; rallies; trump
Axios is of course trying to spin this as "Trump's basement campaign," but I think the graphic is interesting

We are six months away from the opening primary, Trump is being harassed with phony indictments, his events tend to be big with more time and security overhead than Tim Scott or Asa Hutchinson need. For now, the pack will be taking votes from each other. Trump just has to make sure “one” doesn’t emerge from the pack. Christie is running on pro-war types left and making a raw play for Never Trumpers, Tim Scott is going for the generic Republican vote who think a middle of the road minority is more electable, Asa Hutchinson was just looking for something to do etc. None of these candidates except maybe a little from DeSantis will take anything out of Trump’s hide.

Trump’s given several speeches at various republican events in NH and PA in just the last two days, and in NC and GA about a week ago. Today there is a rally in SC. The others have to campaign because so few people even know who they are, Trump has 100 percent name recognition, plus he has a record of actual presidential accomplishments that most already know about.

Trump is doing events in fewer cities than any of the other candidates but he will attract more people to his rallies than all the other candidates combined.

How many of his own large outdoor or stadium filled rallies has Ron done? ZERO. He just shows up at other people’s events or at a picnic that is already scheduled.

Interesting. It would be nice if they do this weekly throughout the campaign.

Why shouldn't Trump wage a "basement campaign"? It worked for Biden in 2020.

I wouldn't be surprised if a judge restricted Trump to travel between his residences and cities where he is indicted and faces a trial.
