Why does he feel it necessary to change the quote?
Because Sundance is not a journalist. He is a creepy Trump cultist who makes up many of these articles from his imagination and without factual basis.
Sundance is playing a whisper campaign against anyone but Trump. He is a boot licking worshipper of Lord Trump.
Technically he didn't; the only part of the headline where Pence is specifically quoted is “No Room in Republican Party”.
But given the context of everything else, anyone who doesn't support Ukraine is inherently an "apologist for Putin" in Pence's eyes. Why? Because if "there is only room [in the GOP] for champions of freedom", and the ones fighting for their freedom are the Ukrainians, then anyone who doesn't want America to provide military assistance to Ukraine (even if they don't support Russia either) therefore isn't a "champion of freedom."
