It’s worse than that. There were several anti-communist Executive orders passed by the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, and probably latter administrations.

It was never illegal to be a Communist per se, but you could not be employed by the Federal Government.

The way I heard it, Slick Willie Jefferson Clinton rescinded those XO’s, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Agreed! Worked for the Gubment for thirty years, used to be broadly accepted policy. Everything was “are you now or have you ever been a member of the communist party?”
