Same goes for the “Handicapped” parking spots: I have seen nearly 100% completely ambulatory folks with their license plates or mirror cards parking in those spots and bouncing happily out of their cars, often with a smirk on their faces for gaming the system.

I have an above-the-knee amputation...Once when I stopped by a grocery store, all the handicapped spots were filled...I had to park pretty far up the lot...As I walked to the store, this young guy, mid twenties, came jogging from the store and went to a car in the handicapped area...

I told him those were for “physically” handicapped people, not “mentally” handicapped....

He looked kinda sheepish and said he had a bad back....

I said I could tell by the way he jogged across the lot...

There is a lawyer in my small city who specializes in facilitating applications to the DMV for handicap license plates and hangtags. The only criterion seems to be skin color.

People used to try and report people parked in those spaces because they looked just fine.

That ended because the average person can’t always see what may be wrong like heart or breathing issues with another person .A cop or a person in the store would confront someone and end up getting in deep doo doo if they were mistaken.

That said, there are many fakers out there but it is hard to stop this.

I feel the same way. I remember when my mother, who used a walker, truly needed to park up close, and lazy slobs would take up those spaces.

They gave out so many that those spots are taken up big time. At Publix, every spot is taken no matter the time of day. Lucky I don’t need one. But that program needs tightened up.
