New Mexico's Zozobra tradition on for the 99th year.
After nearly a century, the tradition of the burning of Zozobra continues.
On Saturday, people from all over gathered at the Santa Fe Place Mall to help stuff the Zozobra's body. At the event, participants were encouraged to write down their troubles from the year to include them as the stuffing. For many kids, it was a first-time experience.
"I never knew that they actually use stuff like this to stuff the Zozobra. I was shocked," said Layla Burkland.
However, participants of all ages were excited to play a part in the process.
One participant, Thomas Birmingham, recently moved to the Land of Enchantment. He says this event was a good way to spend time with family.
"It just seems like a cool thing to do. Take all your troubles, throw it in the fire, burn it away and start new," said Birmingham.
In attendance was Jacob Romero, the construction chair for the Zozobra. Romero says this feels like a full circle moment for him when he remembers being able to come when he was younger and now to help build it for the last 22 years.
"It makes me feel like I was a little kid again. Being here at 8 years old, seeing all the kids come, my first glimpse of the Zozbra and all the paper shredding. Even meeting new friends and experiencing Santa Fe culture," said Romero.
The burning of the Zozobra is right around the corner on September first. Romero says there will be live music, entertainment and lots of food vendors.
What does the burning of Zozobra signify?
Zozobra - Wikipedia
The burning of Zozobra dates from 1924, when artist William Howard Shuster, Jr. burned the first Zozobra in his backyard at a party for his friends and fellow artists. “Zozobra” is a Spanish word for anxiety, worry, or sinking and was chosen by Shuster and newspaper editor E.
Interesting. Never heard of this before.
I would steer clear of any place named Fort Marcy.
Forget it, Jake, it’s Santa Fe.
"Biden, Biden, and more Biden."
That’s flat out creepy. Demonic is the word that first came to me.
Sounds like a pagan ritual
I have seen the burning many times. Fun experience, bring the kids.
I wouldn't Park there!
GMTA. My first thought was, "Sounds like good, clean, pagan fun."
In Biblical times, they would take out their issues on a goat, the scapegoat.
