Putin rules with an iron fist. But he's vulnerable. Nicholas II was a dumb@$$. Putin made a stupid mistake when he invaded Ukraine. But he's paranoid. The Russians want to see his head on a pike.

So why didn’t the Chechens and others take him out? They certainly had a chance to join-in and make the ‘Insurrection’ at least somewhat credible.

Paranoia is a requisite for any dictator and Putin is no different. For Russian strongmen paranoia is an insurance policy. Might not ever need it but it's good to have.
