Bridge pier washed out?
Is that sulfur on those cars in the river?
Oh heck........
It could have been a pier washing out or an attachment point or support rusted out. That is a beautiful area and news is saying at least one of the cars is leaking into the river.
Fly fishing was spectacular there. Our rail system is not having a good year.
Captions indicate it collapsed overnight, and caused of course the cars to run off.
Not clear what that means. Did it happen because of the weight of the cars, or did it happen first and the train came later?
If the latter, that is scary for warning systems. Not telling dispatchers that a bridge is out?
There definitely looks to be a pier at least partially missing.
#34.
Look at the other photos, and only 2 show on aerial view.
They have seen a lot more rain than usual this year. Good explanation I think.
It certainly looks like that pier is completely washed away, doesn’t it?
That’s a very old RIVETED truss bridge — I’d guess at least 100 years old. These types of truss bridges became a common type of bridge built from the 1870s through the 1930s and many still remain across the US, but their numbers are dropping rapidly as they are demolished and replaced with new structures.
The steel sections are fabricated from simpler sections riveted together. The rivets are not just used at the truss plates connecting members.
Truss bridges consisting of more than one span (like this one) may be either a continuous truss or a series of simple trusses. In the simple truss design (this one that failed), each span is supported only at the ends and is fully independent of any adjacent spans. Therefore, each span must fully support the weight of any vehicles traveling over it (the live load).
Rivers all over the west have been very high this spring. I drove from California to North Idaho last month and rivers were near flood stage all over.
2022 saw record flooding in this area, and again this year.
Apparently, the bridge collapsed before the train tried to cross.

Where is Buttplug?
That’s a problem.
Can’t tell from the pic if they were low or high pressure tankers in the river..
Here is what happened....

based on the image, the train did not derail, the bridge de-trained!
