Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday is announcing a national coalition of dozens of sheriffs to join forces to protect American communities against the consequences of the ongoing crisis at the southern border.
The 90-sheriff coalition includes sheriffs from Florida, California, Colorado, South Dakota, Maryland, Illinois, New York, Arizona, and Oregon.
In a statement of support the law enforcement officers say that the federal government has "failed in its responsibilities to secure our nation's borders" and cite the record 2.4 million migrant encounters in FY 2022, as well as the more than 1.6 million encountered so far in FY 23.
"The consequences of the federal government’s abdication are being felt across the nation. Cartels and gang members are bringing record levels of fentanyl and other drugs into our communities as our officers work around the clock to battle these criminal institutions," they say.
"As Sheriffs, we are thankful that Florida has recognized the crisis at our border and we are partnering with the Sunshine State to bring law and order back to our streets."
The sheriffs praise DeSantis -- who is running for president in 2024 -- for creating an anti-smuggling task force, deploying law enforcement including National Guard and highway patrol to the border, and launching a program to transport illegal immigrants to "sanctuary" jurisdictions -- most recently California.

As a presidential candidate has promised to shut down the border and declare a national emergency if elected president as well as resuming border wall construction and reinstating the "Remain-in-Mexico" policy.
In May he signed a broad anti-illegal immigration bill passed by the state legislature which mandates E-Verify, enhances smuggling penalties and bars local jurisdictions from issuing IDs to those in the country illegally.
All sounds great. What I have not heard yet, beyond long overdue eVerify, is plan to deport illegal aliens already in the US.
I hope that deportation is part of the plan too.
Well, since there are probably some 3,000+ county sheriffs in all the United States, this is nowhere near anything like a majority, but hey, you gotta start somewhere. As it turns out, county sheriffs are the highest-ranking elected officials of each county that has one, and have a perhaps disproportionate influence on local politics.
Illegal aliens in the US will not be deported, because, officially, they are “seeking asylum”, and as such, apparently can’t be deported, because their asylum claims have not been heard yet.
This plan sound like a good step, but if you want to see illegal aliens deported, I doubt that will ever happen.

And NO anchor babies, get rid of the visa overstays, restrict the visa system, no dual citizenship, stop legal immigration for 20 years (repeal the Hart-Cellar Act). Cut off the welfare and set up a task force to go from city to city deporting them.
US has over 3000 counties, 90 is a drop in the bucket.
Thanks RDS!
I do love this.
Hmm, maybe I should scare up another contribution to send his way.
A couple of things I did not see before I was blocked. “Signing on to push back” is not an endorsement and I would sure like to see a list of the Sheriffs of border counties. I betcha there are no Democrat Sheriffs on that list. Here in Arizona:
Cochise County Sheriff Mark J. Dannels (R) Probably signed on
Yuma County Sheriff Leon N. Wilmot (R) may have signed on
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos (D) probably did not sign on
Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway (D) probably did not sign on
Proving once again, border security is only a problem with a minority in one political party. To the others it is only a political headache.
And then there’s anchor babies!
Sending 50 illegals to Martha’s Vineyard was a great way for DeSantis to unmask phony white liberal ‘elites’ - and their silly lies about being a ‘sanctuary’ for illegals. The ‘elites’ had the illegals OFF the island within 24 hours.
Don't hold your breath.
