She thought she was unshockable, then two castrated Ukrainian soldiers arrived
Times of London ^ | Saturday June 17 2023, 6.00pm BST | Christina Lamb in Zolota Nyva, Donetsk

For a month the two men could not tell their psychologist what had happened to them, only that it was horrible beyond words. “If there’s hell somewhere, it’s worse than that,” said one.

The Ukrainian soldiers, aged 25 and 28, had been in Russian captivity — one for one month, the other for three.

After their return in a prisoner swap they had been referred to Anzhelika Yatsenko, 41, a psychologist in Poltava who deals with troubled young men. They were suicidal. The younger one had tried to kill himself. “I knew from previous cases they had probably been tortured,” she said. “As someone who gets referred the hardest cases, mostly men under 35, it’s very hard to surprise me.”

When they finally told her, it was, she said, “the first time I behaved not like a professional psychologist”.

“I’d never heard anything so horrible. I told them I needed the bathroom and went and cried and cried. I didn’t want them to see as they might think there’s no hope.”

The two men had been savagely beaten. Then the drunken Russians castrated them with a knife.

“One of them told me, ‘I don’t know how I am still alive, there was so much blood, I thought I’d die of blood poisoning’,” she said.

“And of course it’s not just the physical damage. Imagine, they are young men just starting their sexual life and then in one second it’s all over. They still feel something, all these hormones, but they can’t do anything. They can never be sexually active. For a young man it’s the worst thing to happen.

“Their dignity has been damaged so badly and it’s impossible to forget. The Russians told them, ‘We are doing this so you can’t have kids.’ To me this is genocide.”

It’s what the media does!
William Randolph Hearst got us into the Spanish-American War with his lurid tales of Spanish atrocities.

The same reason you think it’s true.
Just because an article writes a story does not mean it’s true.

Unit 731 was a very small thing in comparison to Japanese atrocities in the Philippines. And THAT was small thing in comparison to what the Japs did to the Chinese.

The sheer mass of cruelty is overwhelming. It’s endless, repetitive with no finality. If you do a deep dive it can get extremely depressing. It’s why, probably, Iris Chang committed suicide after researching her book on Nanking.

Paul Scott (”Rampage”, 2018, on the Manila massacre Feb-March 1945), commented on this. The number of cases is numbing.

Is it not interesting that our defense — Department of Defense — was properly called a War Department. When last did we defend American territory, since WWII?

One reads: "We Are Your Defense -- The Department of Defense is America's largest government agency. With our military tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times, the department has grown and evolved with our nation. Our mission is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation's security."

How are we doing on deterring war?

--- "numbing."

Yes indeed. Did you mean James Scott?

My favorite resource on this topic -- and one of the books on my nearby shelf -- is Rudolph Rummel's "Power Kills -- Democracy as a Method on Nonviolence." Transaction Publishers, 2007.

When you make yourself the guarantor of peace and stability of every clime and place you end up in a lot of wars!

“.. guarantor of peace and stability .. every clime and place ..” - a fool’s errand if there ever was one!

Recall the vocabulary of the "world's policeman" which both parties, when in power, have countenanced. Given the national debt was circa 5 trillion in / about 2000, our national debt has now crossed 32 trillion -- written out $32,000,000,000,000.

About 1.3 trillion dollars of ADDITIONAL DEBT per year added, with the largest part of that being the "world's policeman." For this, Trump's sarcasm when visiting the "beautiful" new NATO headquarters was enough for the politicians in Europe to resent him. Why? So few NATO nations actually were fully funding their portion of NATO over this same time. Why? Because the world's policeman was supposed to pick up the tab. I know this personally for having lived there in much of that time. The US was supposed to do this, so that the socialist sorts could more easily afford their welfare and immigration and, of course, corruption. Threaten them and....

The real fools don't want American fools to awaken to the simple fact that the US has been flimflammed by European politics and by the Democrats and RINOs here, as these actors have suppressed real conservatives there and here.

Americans have it made. Instead of fighting in a war and getting captured to get castrated, you can just attend a public school.

Same horror that happens to our young men when sexual weirdos convince them they're really a 'girl'...

“Is there in fact any government today that may be said to be a flag carrier for Christian values?”

First of all, what are ONG, DLL, bachi boys, and OP?
I have not read the entire Bible, but have read chunks on my own and studied and discussed sections for a college “Greeks and rhe Bible” course. When you say “Christian values” do you mean only the New Testament, or do you also include the Old Testament?

Jesus did not always avoid violence. I remember the incident of his overturning the tables of the money changers in the temple. They were charging outrageous sums to change the many kinds of coins used in the Roman Empire. All sacrificial animals had to be bought with Jewish coinage. This was a violent act, but hardly torture. Having not read the entire New Testament, I don’t know if there might be other more violent episodes, even acts of torture. Certainly the crucifixion was a torture scene, but performed by Romans, not Jews, although set in motion by one segment of the Jewish religious leadership, all as part of God’s plan for his son.
On the other hand the Old Testament had some pretty brutal episodes, including genocide of non Jewish peoples.

Some governments definitely have state religions. Some of these are European countries, and we have certainly heard a lot about those who have Islamic forms of government including Sharia Law, like the Taliban and Saudi Arabia. According to the wishes and votes by our founders, the US Constitution specifically tries to keep religion out of politics. A number of US citizens do not practice a Christian religion or are agnostic or atheists. This does not keep them from practicing a sort of ethical code. For example, the idea “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” is part of the code of all major religions, and many non-churched people.

I don’t think there is any government that completely practices “Christian values” or even the stated values of some other professed religion. They sometimes don’t even practice their people’s generally accepted ethical values. Since the US was NOT established as a Christian nation, we would be doing well if our government simply followed the generally accepted ethical values of our people and Constitution. Our US government fails in this regard far less than some other governments, such as the current Russian one controlled by Vladimir Putin. [You may fire when ready!]

I mean little by the phrase, per se. I responded to another who used the phrase.

Sorry. mate. There will be no "incoming salvo" from me. Rather I shall annoy you with agreement as I highlight what your wrote:

"Since the US was NOT established as a Christian nation, we would be doing well if our government simply followed the generally accepted ethical values of our people and Constitution. "

Especially the Constitution.

Firstly, my wife recognizes that had you added “but they don’t” after your last use of the word “Constitution” then we might have agreed with you. Secondly, your following sentence IS a justification for you perspective. Lastly, you go on to demonize Putin. Good job. You hit almost all the bases.
