The Archbishop of Kansas City has warned priests that they could be offering Mass with invalid matter, and that they should ensure their altar wine is both free from additives and especially vinted for sacramental use.

“It has recently been reported by two priests, having served in three different parishes, that upon their appointment to these parishes they soon discovered the long-term use of wines that were in fact invalid matter for the confection of the Eucharist,” Archbishop Joseph Naumann noted in a May 31 letter obtained by The Pillar.
As a result, he wrote, in those parishes, “for any number of years all Masses were invalid and therefore the intentions for which those Masses were offered were not satisfied, including the obligation pastors have to offer Mass for the people.”
“This is a gravely serious situation for which we must now petition the Holy See for guidance on restorative matters.”

Pope lives in Italy. Maybe it has to be Italian wine?
I spent a month in Italy and surely they used Italian wine.
Jesus came to tell the Jews that they were worshipping the forms and ceremonies of the law and ignoring God. Now this pedantry.
I have a friend who buys the wine for the chapel at the diocesan offices. She researched it. The requirement was simply that it be “the fruit of the vine”. She assumes that if grapes are the sole ingredient she is good to go. The local church goods store charges a lot more for sacramental wine than what she can find at Trader Joe’s, so that’s where she goes. I wonder if she will be revisiting the issue soon.
Jesus said “do THIS in memory of me.”
Not “do whatever you want in memory of me.”
My guess (and it is a guess) is that some silly priest decided to use some “wine” made from something other than grapes (think peach wine cooler or some other goofy cocktail). The diocese, likely embarrassed by the choice, issues a press release but doesn’t give details because they are embarrassing and remind people of all the liturgical abuses associated with the Novus Ordo Mass.
In Charity, I seriously doubt this was just an incident where the priest just used a real wine that had a small additive or wasn’t on an approved list.
I wonder. Is the Catholic Church descending into madness?
Oh give me a break...what difference does it make? IT AIN’T THE BLOOD OF CHRIST! These folx take themselves WAY to serious to the point of silliness.
Boone’s Farm would work just fine.
Is sangria OK?
What’s the word?
Doing this in memory of me....means do it tge way he fid. Just grapes and yeast, no added sugar or flavorings.
Say the prayers and words, fo extrapolate or re-imGine or update.
Just like the 10 commandments cannot be adjusted to say abortion and homosexuality and pornography are not grave sin.
Some wines add sugar to the process.
