Every agency, department, bureau, etc. of the Federal government are constantly looking for ways to protect their existing turf, expand that turf and footprint, and increase their budget. It seems in the Defense Department that readiness, recruiting, maintaining current equipment, etc. always seems to fall down the list of priorities due to all the new stuff, new tech, new whatever. Expanding the kingdom always gets top priority.

Unfortunately, my Navy is more concerned with pronouns and transvestites than doing its historical job of getting the other guys to die for their country.

I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t be very expensive to add some fire and forget AI to track into the target. But, gravity is a relatively slow approach to a target and leaves a lot of time to be intercepted.
