Ukraine's long-awaited attempt to take back the territories in the east and south of the country, occupied by Russia for the past 18 months, is now in full swing.
A key figure in planning and executing this operation is Gen Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine's 49-year-old commander-in-chief. Little known until recently, his popularity now rivals that of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Gen Zaluzhny, or "our Valera" as friends and old classmates like to call him, was appointed commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian military in July 2021.

Within seven months he was leading Ukraine's defence against full-scale invasion.

The commander-in-chief became a national hero, despite being rarely seen in public and even more rarely agreeing to interviews.
His name became synonymous with bravery and determination, and his reputation spawned anecdotes and turns of phrase.
"When Zaluzhny walks into an unlit room, he doesn't switch on the light, he switches off the darkness," one such phrase went.

As talk of a forthcoming Ukrainian offensive intensified, Russian military bloggers began circulating rumours in mid-May that Gen Zaluzhny had been critically wounded or even killed.
This was picked up by Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin who said: "Naturally, we have all information about the state of health of the commander of the Ukrainian Army but we will not disclose it."
Col Anatoly Shtefan, who is close to Gen Zaluzhny, said that while Ukraine's top brass poked fun at the rumours - which they described as the "height of Russian propaganda madness" - it was clear that Ukrainians were starting to worry too.
At the beginning of June, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence published several photos of Gen Zaluzhny attending a military ceremony in Kyiv.

US to send more combat vehicles to Ukraine
The Pentagon has unveiled a new $325 million weapons package for Kyiv that includes 10 Stryker and 15 Bradley armored vehicles, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.
The U.S. Army operates more than 550 Strykers and 4500 Bradley in a variety of configurations.

The numbers we are dribbling into ukraine seems strange to me. The number of abrams Bradley’s Strykers… US have in stock compared to what we have delivered or promised is insane
The weapon systems were built to fight Soviet Union/ Russia and that is what is going on now. These systems are practically speaking useless against China. If it comes down to abrams and Bradleys that war is over.
To me the dribble of weapons systems including and especially including aircraft is criminal.
The Ukrainians are fighting for their country, give them what they need,
If Russia is not defeated and sent home this war will continue and china will take note

he Russian Ministry of Defense has announced that Members of the “VOSTOK” Battalion were able to Capture a number of Leopard 2A6 Tanks and M2A2 Bradley IFVs after they were Abandoned by Ukrainian Forces during their Offensive in the Zaporizhzhia Region; so far the Russia MoD has not shown any Footage or Photos of the Captured Equipment, however a Video was released yesterday that shows Russian Soldiers around at least 1 Leopard 2A6 and multiple M2A2 Bradleys.

Davyd and Kseniia Epelman, both 22 and recently married, were killed in the Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih on the night of 12–13 June.
Davyd and Kseniia got married last year, wrote Svoi.Kryvyi Rih, a local news media.
They celebrated the first anniversary of their wedding on 3 June. Both were teachers.
“Davyd and Kseniia. They were only 22. They were so in love, and they only got married a year ago. They both trained as teachers, the most peaceful profession in the world. Kseniia was a primary school teacher at Gymnasium No. 108. She was an only child.
They both dreamed about having kids. They made plans together. Today a Russian missile took their lives,” wrote Oleksandr Vilkul, Head of the Kryvyi Rih Military Administration.

It was possible to geolocate the site where the Russian self-propelled howitzers were hit. It is located in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, namely the outskirts of the village of Yalynske, Volnovakha district.
