Putin mixes threats of new offensive in Ukraine with offers of peace talks

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday alternated threats of a new Russian offensive to grab more Ukrainian land with statements about the Kremlin's readiness for peace talks.

Speaking during a far-ranging meeting with Russian military correspondents and war bloggers, he made some of the most extensive comments about the conflict and his goals since sending the troops into Ukraine more than 15 months ago.

Here is a quick look at some of Putin's key statements:

UKRAINIAN COUNTEROFFENSIVE

Putin asserted that Ukraine has suffered “catastrophic” losses in its counteroffensive.

He said Ukrainian troops amassed reserves to launch the “large-scale” operation on June 4, but he claimed that the effort has failed to score gains and that Ukraine has lost 10 times more soldiers than Russia. His claims could not be verified.

Putin declared that Ukraine lost 160 battle tanks and over 300 other armored vehicles, while Russia only lost 54 tanks. He alleged that the Ukrainian armor losses represented 25% to 30% of the number of Western armored vehicles supplied to Ukraine.

He noted with a smirk that German-made Leopard battle tanks and U.S.-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles “are burning really well,” adding that leaders in Kyiv must now realize the disastrous consequences of the counteroffensive.

PONDERING NEW LAND GAINS

Putin said Moscow could respond to alleged Ukrainian incursions and shelling of Russia's border regions by carving out what he described as a “sanitary zone” to prevent Kyiv from launching such attacks.

The zone would extend "to a depth that would prevent it from striking our territory,” he added.

Asked how deep into Ukraine Russia could go, Putin responded coyly, saying that “everything will depend on potentials that emerge after the so-called counteroffensive.”

“We will look at the situation and decide on our next moves,” he said. “We have various plans depending on the situation.”

Meanwhile, after the Ukies “ Bradley Square” debacle, Vlad added to that by capturing a Leopard and a few more Bradley’s, still running, a nice addition of western “ wonder weapons” to his trophy collection.

Vlad isn’t going anywhere, except maybe Odesa, get used to it.

“Iraq invaded Kuwait”

Because Kuwait was building pipelines and illegally stealing oil from under Iraqi territory, the fact that you are still believing propaganda that was debunked almost 40 years ago is unreal

Then tell the Ukrainian people to overthrow their CIA installed puppet government from 2014 and this all ends

Yes, 1970's Leopards are "western wonder weapons" to russians. That's actually a sad comment on the russian military, that a 1970's Leopard tank is better that anything the russians currently have.

Putin: We were forced to try to end the war that the West started in 2014 by force of arms.

And Russia will end this war by force of arms, freeing the entire territory of the former Ukraine from the United States and Ukrainian Nazis. There are no other options. The Ukrainian army of the US and NATO will be defeated, no matter what new types of weapons it receives from the West. The more weapons there are, the fewer Ukrainians and what used to be Ukraine will remain. Direct intervention by NATO's European armies will not change the outcome. But in this case, the fire of war will engulf the whole of Europe. It looks like the US is ready for that too.

“overthrow their CIA installed puppet government”

Please explain how it was CIA installed. Us Americans had one lady giving out cookies. Putin has 1000 KGB agents in country.

Russians are dumb and incompetent, but are they that dumb and incompetent?

Putin considers Ukraine to be part of Russia. He said so explicitly again today. If he can’t steal it he will destroy it like all historical Kremlin Bolsheviks before him.

Darth Putin @DarthPutinKGB

So it *is* a war, not a “special military operation” and it *has* been going on for 9 years and we still haven’t won yet…??

I am surrounded by idiocy.

“Then tell the Ukrainian people to overthrow their CIA installed puppet government from 2014 and this all ends.”

Ukraine has had two elections since 2014. Were both of those “CIA installed puppet” governments?

“Putin considers Ukraine to be part of Russia.”

That doesn’t make it so. Hell, he also considers the Baltic countries part of Russia.

Historical fact: More than a thousand years ago, in the 9th century, the Varangians (Scandinavian raiders and traders) founded Kyiv — the capital of the current country of Ukraine — which was the heart of the first Slavic state, Kyivan Rus, the birthplace of BOTH Ukraine and Russia. Thus, Kyiv predates both Moscow and Russia.

Putin and Russian chauvinists of his ilk consider Ukraine to be part of Russia. Ukrainians, unsurprisingly, don’t want to die in Russian torture chambers. Clearly there is no basis for any negotiation here until Russians stop murdering Ukrainians and go home to Moscow.

I find it quite ironic that those who deny Ukrainians their right to national sovereignty do so while sitting on their butts powerless as President Trump is arrested. Ukrainians fight for their sovereignty in ways that Putin’s deluded, weak and broken westerner fan club clearly never will. And that’s why they hate them.

“Us Americans had one lady giving out cookies”

Yeah because MI6 and CIA would just be out in the open, right?

“Russians are dumb and incompetent”

You mean the Russia which now is even more financially wealthy because of BRICS?

Also who again is sending billions of dollars to Ukrainian oligarchs and weapons which the Ukrainian military cannot even hit 9 out of 10 targets?

Do realize the Ukie Leopards ( and MRAPS and Bradleys, etc) were destroyed before firing a shot, once again attesting to Ivan’s abilities.

Vlad still holds all the cards, and there is nothing the collective West can do about it.

The only reason Russia would be upset about the Maidan is because Yanukovych was a Russian puppet...just as he was accused of being.

That’s still not an excuse for Putin’s cowardly sneak attack on a Ukraine that hadn’t attacked Russia.
