Robert Hanssen: The fake job that snared FBI agent who spied for Moscow
BBC ^ | June 5 | BBC

Robert Hanssen was one of the most damaging spies in the history of the FBI. The former US agent, who has died in prison, leaked top secrets to Moscow for nearly 20 years - betrayals that the agency says cost lives. It took 300 agents to finally bring him down. Two of them who played a central part tell us how they did it.

In December 2000, FBI agent Richard Garcia had a curious visit from a colleague overseeing the Russia desk.

"He asked, 'Do you know a guy named Robert Hanssen?'" Mr Garcia recalled. "I said, 'No'."

The official responded: "Good. Because you're about to."

A few months later, in part thanks to Mr Garcia's covert work, the whole country would as well. Hanssen's arrest in February 2001 sent shockwaves through the intelligence community and the extent of his double life burst on to the front pages.

More than two decades later, on Monday this week, authorities announced that he had been found unresponsive in his cell at the maximum-security prison in Colorado where he was serving a life sentence. He was 79 and is thought to have died from natural causes.

Mr Garcia, now 70 and retired from the FBI, reacted tersely to the news. "Good riddance," he said.

Hanssen had studied Russian in college and began working for the FBI in 1976. Within a decade, he was double-crossing the bureau. Starting in 1985, Hanssen operated as a destructive mole within the US government, selling top secret documents to the USSR and Russia, and compromising the identities of undercover spies.

Hanssen's double life and his strange obsession According to the 100-page affidavit outlining his crimes, Hanssen's espionage resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of three US sources and the execution of two more.

Shared all he did, espionage, perving photos of his wife, to his Opus Dei priest in confession. Priest told him to give the money he was getting to Mother Theresa!

During his arrest in the park, his first words to the FBI were, “What took you so long”?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was framed.

Even though I’m against World War 3 with Russia these days - back then, during the Cold War, I was PERFECTLY HAPPY with taking down the Soviet Union, so I’m glad to see Hanssen getting a bit of ‘justice’ even if it took several decades, and even if the America Haters (Ukraine War supporters) aren’t happy about it.

No, he wasn’t framed. The evidence was so overwhelming, he agrees to plead guilty if his wife who eventually learned of his betrayal to the country got a low sentence. If that term was met, he’d tell everything he did and knew about his and Russian spying.

He kept his word about that.

Hanson is the only source for that story.
Believe him if you will.

Bill Clinton was the greater traitor. He sold our country out to anyone.

From my reading of the case, there is a decent chance Hansen stumbled on something in FBI, and all of this was conjured up out of thin air to take him out of the game.

Either way, everything you are reading here is likely a lie. Remember, he did this for a living. No way he did these things they are claiming. I do not know the truth, but I know all of this is a lie.

I have seen the domestic surveillance machine myself firsthand. I’ve got nearly a decade now as a target, partly due to political activism. I even get the next door neighbor observation/monitoring posts like Ed Buck had.

I can tell you with 100 certainty, as a counterintel agent with FBI, there is no way Hansen would have done what was alleged, as he would know how surveillance works as well. He would not speak out loud in proximity to the Russian embassy, he would not do physical dead drops in parks, which are monitored for such activity, and he would not leave fingerprints on trash bags. You cannot do that, and he would have known it.

I also know there is no way a bunch of middle easterners could have come to the US, been traveling to terrorist conventions, been planning a major terrorist attack, and their local sector surveillance never got curious about what they were up to. Even before James Woods gave FBI names, and said he knew they were going to hijack a plane.

Hansen got busted, and went along with it, as did his wife probably because he knew how the country works, in ways very few do. It isn’t like you think.

IMO, since this happened in the runup to 9/11, I have to wonder whether he saw something he shouldn’t have, and was looking to somehow expose it. I do know the official story is a lie.

True, Hanssen signed up for the FBI to sell our country’s security as a Fellow Traveller for Opus Dei (those kind of globalists). Clinton was on the see eye ehhh payroll paid in cocaine, broads and all the time firing blanks while hitlery chased little girls and Huma the Hummer special agent for the Muslim Brotherhood (who married Weiner the Wanker flasher, mentored by Chuckie Schumer). A pandora’s box of “religious” motivated whackos, most of whom Justice has not caught up.

Agree. Even though the “root causes” of the current Ukrainian kickback scam (a disaster for the Ukrainian people including ethnic Russians). Embedded habits die hard- all the way from the collapse of East Germany and Gorby’s coup from Yeltsin. An untenable system of corrput apparatchik-crats. Which btw the US is becoming— uniparty corruptocrats lining their pockets and borrowing from a private bank of last resort to do it. Tax-0-crats redistributing without permission.
