It’s gotten so ridiculous in air travel. You have your “ gold star” drivers license which had you produce a birth certificate and proof of residence like your lease or mortgage and 2 utility bills to get the license. it’s got your entire driving and criminal history ( even if it’s none) encoded on the back. That’s more than whats on a passport. Then you bought an expensive plane ticket. Then they engage you in a series of questions that are designed to make people nervous, and go through and scan your luggage and your carry on items. Boy, ain’t freedom grand. Those of us that remember when air travel was cheap and easy like in the 70’s, I could fly from Sarasota to Miami on Florida Air’s dc3 for 25 dollars each way. Pay cash 10 minutes before takeoff, show no id, walk out and board the plane. Then enjoy a weekend in Miami with friends, fly back Monday morning and go to work. The us customs along the canadian border have always been sort of aholes. I was held up for 48hrs coming back into the US from a trade show because I had a silicon graphics computer system with a silicon graphics monitor. They said the monitor also had a sony label on it ( that where sgi bought the display tubes from) and so I could pay 1200.00 tariff on a monitor that was bought in the us or show that tariffs had been paid on the Japanese components. Luckily I had good contacts at Silicon Graphics, and they dug out the paperwork and faxed it to my hotel. when i presented it the next day, the agents didn’t approve the paperwork, they needed a supervisor to review it. on the 3rd morning it still wasn’t approved. I went to a fedex office in canada with the paperwork, and shipped the monitor home with no duties owed. when I went through the crossing, and didn’t have the monitor, they actually went through the car’s trunk looking for it. They asked me what I had done with it, and I said I no longer had possession of it, any other questions. the supervisor came out,I said I wasn’t carrying anything that was purchased outside the us, and he let me enter. what a bunch of dicks.
