US putting 'full weight' behind India's defence modernisation: Austin

"I can tell you that the US government is putting our full weight behind supporting India's defence modernisation. I look forward to continuing to work with Minister Singh going forward," Austin said.

In his comments to the media, the US defence secretary spoke about various dimensions of the growing defence and strategic cooperation between India and the US and its significance in the current geo-political scenario.

"This all matters because we all face a rapidly changing world. We see bullying and coercion from the People's Republic of China and Russian aggression against Ukraine that seeks to redraw borders by force and threatens national sovereignty, as well as transnational threats such as terrorism and climate change," he said.

His remarks come amid rising tension in the Taiwan Strait where a Chinese naval ship cut sharply across the path of an American destroyer on Saturday, forcing the US vessel to slow to avoid a collision.

The US defence secretary also rejected China's allegations that the US was trying to establish an Asian NATO in the Indo-Pacific.

"We are absolutely not trying to establish a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) in the Indo-Pacific. We continue to work with like-minded countries to ensure that the region remains free and open," he said.

The Indian bureaucracy and corruption is at least as much a danger to India as the Chinese or the Pakistanis. I don’t know if this is still true, but as recently as 2010 companies that wanted a military contract would need to set aside sufficient bribes to secure it. The fact you had the cheapest and best hardware wouldn’t win you the contract. American companies are particularly hampered by American anticorruption laws whereas the UK thinks corruption is just fine. I suspect that BAE and Mahindra are tied at the hip so Mahindra can handle the *cough* politics while BAE builds the weapons. So, how exactly we’re going to be behind it isn’t clear, unless we’re just giving them weapons. Co-development is unlikely to succeed unless we’re somehow contributing money as, at some point, the developed product will need to be bought and that takes a bribe...or two, or three.

one of our enemies

Remember they would have troops occupying Canada if it were not for the US military standing standing in their way.

I thought India was cozying up to Russia and China?

Not quite as much as US has been cozying up with Ukraine and China, and increasing incidents of Chinese spy and and warships in Indian territorial waters are causing tensions.

India has been a steady buyer of Russian weapons for decades and they are bargain hunting for Russian oil. However they have always kept the Soviets and now the Russians at arms length.

China is India’s second biggest threat, after Pakistan. China occupies territory claimed by India, they fought a border war in the 1960s, and had have had border clashes on and off for years.

India and the U.S. both fear an expansionist China, so we are working more closely together on a mutual problem.

Yes, but how many millions of Indians are now in the US and Canada, invading and taking over right in front of us?

An invasion force indeed, but invited by the enemy within, not mobilized by India.

Is this admission that the Bidens are ready to kill someone who rats them out? It is certainly a thinkable thought. The Clintons have set a pretty strong precedent and there would be no accounting even if the perp is known.
