That’s how champion pro golfer, Payne Stewart, died. The private plane he was in lost cabin pressure and flew on its own almost all the way across the US from Florida in a northwesterly direction until it ran out of fuel and crashed. All aboard perished. US fighter planes escorted it all the way but, of course, could do nothing to prevent the crash.
I believe I remember readi ng that though they were powerless to help the unconscious and likely dead pilot and passengers, they shadowed the doomed plane in order to be able to try to shoot it down if it looked like it would crash near populated areas. RIP. :(
