Money For Nothing: Universal Basic Income to Be Trialed in England
Breitbart ^ | 5 Jun 2023 | KURT ZINDULKA

A trial of universal basic income (UBI) will be trialled for the first time in England where 30 people will be given a monthly stipend with no strings attached.

The UBI scheme, to be run by the Autonomy think tank, will see 30 people given a monthly allowance of £1,600 a month without any requirements. The scheme will take place in the town of Jarrow in the North East of England and in the East Finchley area of North London, Sky News reports.

The pilot scheme will also draft a control group that won’t receive the free cash, in order for the researchers to measure the impact of the money on the lives of the participants.

The director of research at Autonomy Will Stronge said: “All the evidence shows that it would directly alleviate poverty and boost millions of people’s wellbeing: the potential benefits are just too large to ignore.”

However, opponents of the socialist-style scheme express concerns that giving people a universal basic income would create perverse incentives that could have massive ramifications on the labour market.

Others have noted that for a government to enact such a system, it would require a major overhaul of the tax and benefits systems, as well as putting a heavy strain on public finances, which have been in disarray in the UK following the spending spree during the Chinese coronavirus crisis during which the government paid businesses to remain shuttered and for workers to remain home.

Results from previous UBI trials have also indicated that wealth transfers could have the opposite outcome from the alleged noble intentions of proponents.

I thought that the Britons already had instituted such a program several hundred years ago.

It's called "the Royal Family."

Only an idiot doesn't realize that the intrinsic gain from working for a living is only partly due to the money.

The biggest part of it is that earning a living gives a person meaning.

Not only does a universal basic income ignore that fact, it actually reduces meaning.

People who get money for nothing are often burdened with a sense of guilt and worthlessness that is far greater than that of those who are just unemployed.

Of course, there are exceptions.

Some people who get money for nothing are not bothered at all (which is evidence of what might be called economic sociopathy or lack of economic conscience). We've all worked with people like that.;-)

Money for nothing from the taxpayers via government is called “welfare”

If the money only goes to ‘the poor’ it’s NOT universal basic income.

It’s welfare.

And we all know what welfare does to a community.

Whose friend do you have to be to be one of the lucky 30?

Beyond that, if this were done on a large scale. It would be great ... for the first month or two. Then prices would adjust and everyone would be worse off.

Depending on how much over 70 that works for me.

Don't forget that UBI reduces incentive to produce something for society. Nobody will provide goods and services the society needs if everybody gets money for nothing.

And by the way, the free money doesn't help. In the end it creates artificial inflation.

The thing about this "experiment" is that they might actually see differences between the control group and experimental group; most of those differences will be considered "positive" and everyone will pat themselves on the back and insist that UBI should be implemented.

The thing about the UBI experiment is though, it will not scale up well. It certainly won't scale up to the point where you can pay all of society to site on their collective behinds. Someone or some group will have to work.
