Vladimir Putin’s troops “may not hold on to Bakhmut,” a military analyst has said.
Michael Kofman of the Center for Naval Analyses, a US research group, said Russian forces will “find it difficult to defend” Bakhmut now Wagner mercenary fighters are withdrawing from the city.
“And so they may not hold on to Bakhmut, and the whole thing may have ended up being for nothing for them down the line,” he told the War on the Rocks podcast in an interview on Tuesday.
Russian forces declared victory in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut last month after a nine-month battle with Ukrainian forces.
However, Ukrainian deputy defence minister Hanna Maliar has warned that “the battle for the Bakhmut area hasn’t stopped,” she said. “It is ongoing, just taking different forms.”
Maliar said artillery shelling still goes on in Bakhmut at levels similar to those at the height of the battle to take the city.
It comes as Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said his men would withdraw from the city, after a dispute with the Kremlin over a lack of ammunition received from Putin’s government.

The reaction is the point of that exercise.
It’s a diversion, designed to force a commitment of forces arguably better used elsewhere.
And the Russians certainly know that. But if the PR stress is bad enough such an error may be unavoidable.
His Rachel Maddow glasses are cute.
ROFLOL...What’s left for Ukraine to take it back with? Only a moron would believe this.
Update on the conflict in Ukraine for June 3, 2023
- Ukrainian cross-border operations are spearheaded by militants identified by even the Western media as N*z**; MO< - Ukraine has increasingly relied on terrorism following the loss of Bakhmut and a growing missile and drone campaign being carried out by Russia across Ukraine;
- New “security assistance” package from the US Department of Defense to Ukraine includes munitions reflecting Ukraine’s growing shortage of air defense capabilities;
- Talk of tanks and warplanes are admittedly for Ukraine’s use in the distant future, not for the upcoming offensive;

I would like to know what Michael Koffman has for military experience, when and where he served, what wars he has fought in. Was he a soldier or a commander? What is his favorite gun? Has he ever driven a tank? Did he do Junior ROTC in high school? Did he pilot a plane or a helicopter? Was his father a military man? Which military academy did he graduate from?
Why bother, it is a leveled shithole.
To be pro-Ukraine is to be in favor of sending billions of dollars in funding to Ukraine, as cash and weapons. To be against sending billions of dollars to Ukraine in the form of cash and weapons is to be a pro-RuzziA Putinist, Putin apologist, Putin ass-kisser, Putin Boot Licker. I am not necessarily in favor of Russia or Putin but I am against funding the war. All the pro-Ukraine people who keep calling other people names (who oppose funding that war) make me hope that Russia actually wins.
Sorry, I’m Pro-American. Making Russia Great Again has never been in the interest of patriotic American conservatives. Kicking Russian corruption and influence out of Europe to the benefit of Americans and the American economy is the conservative position here. That you wish the people of Ukraine have the slavery and death of the filthy Russian World says nothing about them and everything about you.
