I was there and it was. At least in the early 70's.
Yes, I was paying apartment rent (along with 3 roommates) from the proceeds of a part-time, minimum wage job at McDonald's while attending school. It wasn't exactly "living the dream", but I could get by until something better came along. And it did.
That does not seem to happen today. I see 40-year-olds working at the McDonalds counters. WTF happened?
Things got pretty bad by the mid-70's. The "Deep State" was a real thing even back then, and they screwed up badly after deposing Nixon and putting in Jimmy Carter.
There was some recovery in the 80's and 90's, then rot set in after 2000, and we have had a lot of bumpy slides since then. 2016+ looked better, and 2020 put an end to all that.
The "Zoomer" kids today are absolutely screwed. It is unkind to tell them that. Since I work with a bunch of them, I remain silent on that topic and give them as much encouragement as I can. God bless 'em, they are hard-working, attentive, smart, and competent at their jobs. Employers are lucky to have them.
No, I was not one of the people squandering an inheritance and saddling later generations with a crippled system and a declining standard of living. That blame rests with our political rulers who gamed the system to keep themselves in power and bleed out everybody else.
As George Carlin said, "It's a big club and you are not in it".
We seem to be in a liquidation economy, cannibalizing the middle class, and working class, to the temporary benefit of a political elite. That elite group needs to be scraped off and burned to ashes.
I used to like self-checkout until they started closing half of the stations, and all but one cashier-manned station. No matter what you do, you wait in a long line to pay for your goods.
The stores do not have enough staff to monitor the "self-checkout" stations for blatant shoplifting. This is why we cannot have nice things.
It might be more effective to staff up and open all of the cashier lanes, while discontinuing the self-checkout stations.
What was old becomes new.

This...
I have had it explained to me that it is unforgevable.
You become chaff for the pyre.
A goat to be seperated from the sheep.
Oh heck no. Not at all.
I hate eating out anyway.
No "meaningful human interaction" with people in front of me holding up the line with their BS or having to watch sullen cash register operators like a hawk.
I don't go to the store for "meaningful human interaction" and don't mind the surveillance to prevent theft.
YMMV, but the more they keep people out of it, the more I like it.
Never had the machine ask me for a tip either. Nor a human checker for that matter. Occasionally a charity appeal. Easy to say no (especially to a machine) and any guilt trip is strictly in your head.
When I use self check-out, I am the clerk.
And so how do I tip myself 20%?
Maybe by not scanning 1/5 of the stuff?
We bought a buggy load of groceries at the local Wally World the other day. Got to checkout and there were no live lines open, so we had to go to the steal-and-go lane. While we were scanning our stuff there were about a half dozen typical Wally World employees standing around, BS’ing and playing on their phones. I think they were supposed to be watching the self-checkouts for cheaters.
Interesting.
Last week bought a sub with mayo on the side. I was surprised to see a .50 cent charge for the mayo.
Condiments ordered on the side shouldn’t incur a fee if they’d be free on the food otherwise.
That said, mayo is now $8 a jar.
no auto tips for me. The self check at Walmart works well and easy to use. Kiss your gossiping checker and granny with her checkbook in front of you, goodbye. You will put items in your basket, the app will deduct the price and when you put in the last item, just walk out of the store. No checker, self or otherwise. Some of you would be lookin for black smiths in the age of the automobile.
Is there a key where we can sign up for reparations?

My power is in my middle finger.

they should be paying the customer for doing THEIR job!
PLUS you are charged .10 cents or more for a bag!
I believe that money is laundered to the democrat party.
I hate self-check out. I don’t work for the company and I ahte doing unpaid work for them. At least, give us a 1% discount. But no, unpaid.
And I usually have to get someone to come over every time for something that didn’t ring up right.
