The Biden administration on Wednesday proposed requiring automatic emergency braking (AEB) on all new passenger cars and light trucks and set new performance requirements, one of the most significant safety regulations proposed in recent years.
The new requirements proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would require most vehicles to comply three years after being finalized and is expected to dramatically reduce crashes associated with pedestrians and rear-end crashes.
The auto safety agency projects the rule would save at least 360 lives and reduce injuries by at least 24,000 annually.
Congress directed NHTSA in the 2021 infrastructure law to create a rule to establish minimum performance standards for AEB systems, which use various sensors like cameras and radar to detect when a vehicle is close to crashing, and then automatically applies brakes if the driver has not done so.
NHTSA chief counsel Ann Carlson said the proposal seeks to "require all cars to be able to stop and avoid contact with a vehicle in front of them up to 62 miles per hour. And the proposal would require pedestrian AEB, including requiring that AEB recognize and avoid pedestrians at night."

yay, more shit to drive the costs up of vehicles, and ultimately more shit to fail.
I am so sick of everyone living in fear. It’s not living. It’s irrational. All of these stupid chits just make things more expensive.
Eventually, we won’t be driving cars anymore. Maybe by 2050.
Wow, a whole 360 lives /sarc. Now do Fentanyl.
Yay, more sensors to repair!
My thoughts exactly. This proposal is to make it easier for people to use their cell phones without paying attention to the road.
That’s about the same number of adults in Minnesota that need an adult sized changing table.
The state just mandated them.
How about a tin foil hat effect device that will negate any cell phone usage inside the automobile?????
That would help more than slow joe’s I’m slow on the brakes only safety switches.
And a pill that alleviates pure stupidity would be good too.
My 2019 F150 XLT had that “feature”.
The physics of the rear end crash situation is that if the system don’t intervene while there is still time to steer around, a crash is guaranteed if you don’t steer. The energy absorbed by the crash is, however, mitigated.
I think they already can but just haven’t yet
The auto safety agency projects the rule would save at least 360 lives and reduce injuries by at least 24,000 annually.
They never look at the system.
guns save more lives than they cuase deaths.
Walk if you’re so damn worried.
Can you imagine the 500 car pile up on the interstate in the fog.
“reduce crashes associated with pedestrians and rear-end crashes”
The pedestrians hit generally were crossing unsafely.
Perhaps red lights should have faster cycling rates so there are not five-minute long streams of cars.
In England they have pedestrian islands so pedestrians can cross half the street at a time.
Rear end crashes are buffered by the rear end of the car hit and the relative speed differences tend to be modest.
Doesn’t sound safe to me. A hard brake at 60 mph+.?
What about the car behind you or beside you? What if the car you had to brake. For just did a merge? Sounds like a multiple car crash scenario to me.
The new Jeep Wagoneer has an auto park brake. It’s like having an invisible angry mother in law stomping the brake pedal when she pleases.
We need sensors to say, “Your fly is open,” before you exit the vehicle.
The more computerized the cars get the more the possibility of hacking and malware.
Some tv shows (fiction) have had car doors lock with person trapped inside. Cars that stop and can’t be restarted. And cars that had override on the assisted braking so they couldn’t stop.
Laughing at me? As Sonny Bono would say, go ahead.
