That’s the worst part of this, McCarthy’s “negotiators” were supposed to hold all the cards because Biden and the Dems refuse to even look at the House bill that actually passed. They know they’re the ones resisting a resolution through Constitutional means, and terrified because a default would cost Democrats far more than Republicans in 2024. That’s why they were talking stupid things like minting a 2 trillion dollar coin, but Supreme Court has already said it would block that kind of unilateral thing and that Biden had to sit down and come to an agreement with the Congress, with the starting point being the House bill that passed.
So if McCarthy had been an actual conservative and a leader, he would have held fast and demanded passage of the terms in the House bill as a bare minimum for the debt ceiling raise. He had all the advantages here and Biden and the Demonrats were the ones utterly desperate for a deal to avoid a hit that would bring down the Dems in 2024. Even all the fear-mongering about the debt limit and default itself turned out to be nonsense, just when June 1 was approaching Janet Yellen went out and said “oh just kidding, we have until June 5”. And we know of course there’d be another delay and another for weeks or months if the Dems wanted to draw it out enough, the Treasury can easily pay the obligations for bonds and T bills for many months going ahead. All McCarthy had to do was hold fast and resist the fear-mongering, and eventually since Biden and the Dems are the desperate ones, they’d be forced to accept the House bill as a bare minimum to avoid default, as a starting point for the actual deeper reigning in of government spending we’ve long needed.
But McCarthy couldn’t even do that. He caved completely at the very start of negotiations. He and the rest of the Chamber of Commerce bribed RINO leadership are losers, cowards and traitors all-in one.
