It would seem that your thinking is wrong.
According to the facts, Trump was more against illegals coming into the country than DeSantis, as witnessed by the border wall and the low count of Mexicans and other illegals that came into the country when Trump was president.
One question: do you thing that DeSantis would have even thought about building the border wall. Remember that after the fact or 20/20 hindsight doesn't apply.

The border wall push had been around for a lot of years.
Here is a 2012 politician facing pushback against the national wall because of the cost estimated at 6.5 million dollars per mile.
