Are we fascists again?
I can never keep the hyperboles straight from one bargain basement histrionics fit to the next.
When college students at the library where I worked during the administration of G.W. Bush used the word “fascist” ten times a day for his policies and him, I sometimes told them “You’re wearing out a word now that someday you will need to use when an actual fascist comes to power again.” They didn’t listen.
Similar to the poets like Michael McClure of the Beats who would use a word or two in caps, then more, until in later poems the whole page was in caps and there was no way to emphasize something even more energetically and emotionally.
Note: He was in the famous photo of the young Bob Dylan outside the City Lights Bookstore in the 60s. He and the Doors organ player Ray Manzarek much later went on annual tours reading poetry with music improvization.
