Florida law puts a brake on hiring of undocumented workers

Miami (AFP) – Benjamin Perez cleans houses in Miami for a living. Like tens of thousands of others in the Florida workforce, he toils without legal papers.

The future of this off-the-books labor force today sits in limbo due to a recently approved immigration law.

Conservative Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on May 10 signed what he called the "strongest anti-illegal immigration bill in the nation" to bar undocumented workers from taking jobs in the southern US state.

Starting July 1, businesses with 25 or more employees will be required to use the federal E-Verify system to check the legal status of all new employees.

Businesses would face heavy fines for defying the law and employing undocumented migrants.

That will let poor Ben off. Very few cleaning services have more than 25 employees.

Even if it is only 75/80% effective it is a start.
Good job DeSantis

Probably cause some problems/uproar but if they aren’t
legal then they shouldn’t be here. Now how many other
low end workers that would be interested in taking the
jobs is another question.

The largest question/problem as I see it is where are
will these people go and who will support them. If
they are deported is one thing but if just relocated
it just makes the problem for some other location.

Just look at the propagandist words in this piece. Future of an off the books labor force? Why is that even treated like it should be a thing? There should be no future for such a thing, there’s no justification for it, no excuse for it, it’s definitely not a reason for amnesty and a “path to citizenship” as a reward for violating the sovereign borders of America, hiding under the radar, dodging taxes, draining resources… every time I’m reminded of W’s “doing the work the American people don’t want to do” tripe I get irritated at the middle finger his attitude gives to justice. Ditto McCain and Graham with their amnesty schemes.

It welcomes human trafficking, promotes racism and justifies a slavery mentality under the guise of compassion. No, no and hell no. And what took Florida so long to act? Prosecute users of illegal day labor don’t accept “a nanny problem” as reasonable.

I get that there are socioeconomic problems in central and South America along with elsewhere but American can’t absorb everyone. It has to have an orderly system of legal immigration. The solution to this problem is to overthrow tyrants at home. Many aren’t strangers to hard work but they are more afraid of holding their own cultures and societies accountable ** than the risks of coming here. They know we won’t kick them out for long no matter their criminal history. We’ll pretend we have border enforcement but that’s a joke. Only Trump seemed to get it.

** I call the black community out for this too. Tolerating crime, rejecting education, embracing hustles over hard work all have nothing to do with whites and slavery and Jim Crow. There’s definitely systemic racism at play but it is self sustaining, cultural in nature and enforcement, and thrives because of politics, power and profit. Any of these urban areas could turn around in a generation if they reformed and held themselves accountable. That’s hard work, requires discipline and breaking the mental chains that keep themselves from thriving. The problem is within but it’s easier to whine, excuse, riot, steal and blame than to fix ourselves.

Construction, landscaping and food service are about to come to a standstill in Florida.

It’s a joke as you point out but he’ll get his headlines and polish his born again conservative credentials just in time for 2024.

I can’t believe eVerify is still controversial. If you oppose it, you are telling everyone you plan to use illegal labor and support human trafficking and modern slavery. And I guess that’s ok

We used to have laws against hiring those invaders. When did we do away with those laws?

If this law is effective, look for DC to somehow cut off Florida from access to E-Verify, or shutdown the entire system.

If the bastards are working without reporting that income to the IRS, they should be deported and their U.S. voter registration sprayed with graffiti and cancelled.

I doubt it. There are still plenty of legal folks in Florida to do the work and willing to do the work.

The chamber of commerce ain't gonna like that and it could put a lot of NGOs like Catholic Charities out of the human trafficking business--the last thing these groups want to see is for this to take effect in other states.
