I started collecting stamps in the third grade (9 years old, 1945 (I will save you the math, I am 87 yo.)). I asked for and received a globe and desk for Christmas, both of which I still have next to me in my bed room. it is amazing how much history and geography I learned from those cheap Littleton Stamp Company packets... In my teen years the desk served as the base for my amateur radio station that further enhanced my knowledge of geography and other nations.

Do kids still collect stamps and such or play with short wave radios?

I now regret that I gave my stamp collection to my cousin when I went into the navy in 1954. I am still a Ham operator, W5VEX, that also led me to a career in electronics(retired IBM techie) and a lot of weather knowledge due to storm spotting...
