He was never a Jew, neither by birth or practice. His father’s line was, until a decade and a half before his father was born; the father was raised Catholic, and his mother comes from the non-Jewish (and opium-trading) Forbes family.
I despise Kerry more than most Leftist politicians (and that’s saying something), and even more after this article, but your hang-up with his tenuous connection to Judaism says way more about you than him.
