You are precisely correct. I was very much against the Patriot Act when first proposed. I recognized that it had the ability to do much more harm than good. I was right.

More or less, yes ... the insane bush-hate groupthink around here to the contrary notwithstanding.

That is why any expansion of government power must be examined according to how it will inevitably be ABUSED. That the present government will use it to pursue and eliminate genuine enemies of We the People is not the only issue. That the next government, consisting of power-hungry corruptocrats, will abuse it is often a more important consideration.

The over-use, misuse, and corrupt abuse of RICO and Civil Asset Forfeiture must serve as a cautionary tale.
