The Ukrainian military and Russia's Wagner private army both reported further Russian retreats around the city of Bakhmut on Thursday, as Kyiv pressed on with its biggest advance for six months ahead of a planned counteroffensive.
Ukrainian troops near the front line said Russia was bombarding access roads to slow the Ukrainian assault, which has shifted momentum after months of slow Russian gains in Europe's deadliest ground combat since World War Two.
"Now, for the most part, as we have started to advance, they are shelling all the routes to front positions, so our armoured vehicles can't deliver more infantry, ammunition and other things," said Petro Podaru, commander of a Ukrainian artillery unit.
Ukraine's military said troops had advanced in places by more than a mile. Its forces had been on the defensive for half a year, weathering a huge offensive by Moscow that saw only slow gains.

If it is over, then why are they still fighting and Prigozhin still whining and complaining?
Now that the dog has caught the car, what will it do with it? Lol!
This is one helluva pryhic victory for Russia. Seems to me Ukraine is in the process of enciclement with a minimum of forces. I think the goal here is to attract Russian forces from the south making it easier for the counteroffensive to make a push in the south to cut the landbridge in two. We shall see.

Russian totally whipped in Bakhmut. Again. As usual. Also will be again tomorrow. /snicker

All this competition over an outcome which will be clarified in a near future seems energetic and, like the kid game -- says "yes," then "no," then "yes" and again "no." Such is the quality of the "intelligence" pouring out of the Biden-Putin contest.
Which is "still not over." It will be over when it's over. None of the rhetorical salvos from any voice here in Free Republic will change the outcome.

Ritteer claims the war is basically over and is in a mopping-up phase.
An interesting choice of words. This is all fun, huh?
It appears to be all fun and games for those who make ridiculous assertion like Ritter did. Perhaps you should take him to task.
May God bless and protect Ukraine and Ukrainians
LOL
thanks for that
Happy to do so. May I take you all to task? "Our" view is that two non-NATO nations of thugs and cheats are warring, and "we" are 1) not officially at war, and yet 2) "we" are spending massive sums using "our" credit card to burn munitions in the hundreds of millions of dollars, not to mention deaths on both sides?
It remains my assertion that this whole "event" is "not our circus" and the nation should not be wasting billions, as we did in Afghanistan, that war that Obama said was "winnable."
What are your assertions? What are you going to win?
“May God bless and protect Ukraine and Ukrainians”
Yes, may God bless the most corrupt country in Europe.
You’re one sick puppy.
Utkin is literally daring Putin to kill him!
You mean Prigozhin...he’s the owner of Wagner and the one who blasts Shoigu and Gerasimov every night on telegram.
Happy to do so.
Well, take Ritter task as I suggested. Thanks.
