Maybe the population increase in cities includes a lot of illegal aliens?

Those moving to Texas and Arizona are probably just fleeing California.

U.S. metro areas grew by roughly 0.4 percent between 2021 and 2022We have a wide open border to our south with illegals pouring into our metro areas.
Just pointing that out,

Wow! Is this title misleading. They want to imply the likes of the NYC cliff dwelling expats have come back to the rotten apple.
Instead, gaining Urban areas in general were cited like Dallas, Phoenix and the Villages in Fla???
Nope, doesn't work quite like they want you to think. It is not an urban population gain, it is an urban population shift.

Some metro areas have a huge land area—as big as my state (CT).
Statistics on “metro areas” are meaningless.

The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area in Texas had the
biggest numeric population jump in the U.S., adding 170,396
people. Georgetown, Texas, had the highest percent change,
with a 14.4 percent increase. Houston, Texas, also added more
than 124,000 residents.

I guess the question becomes
“How many of these just crossed the
Rio Grande from Mexico into Texas”?
And are they legal or illegal new commers?

I sure hope so. I am SO sick of all these city people moving out to the country and trying to impose their horrible values on the rest of us.
