How is it that Ukrainian top brass are never killed?
Because the Ukes rarely report losses.
Russian Opsec has been terrible from the start.
Russia has a top-down command structure and troop morale problems, so their commanders have to deploy near the front line soldiers.

Russian commanders are facing a problem with “combat compliance” that Ukrainian commanders don’t have. Combat compliance is when you have, say, two units coming into a highly defended area from different directions. The idea is to attack simultaneously to split the defense and thus overwhelm them. But Group A hangs back to let Group B, who they likely don’t know and haven’t met, absorb the defensive fire. They report over the radio they are engaged and are giving made-up progress reports. Meanwhile, Group B is doing the same thing. To stop this the Russians have sent very senior commanders to the front lines.
The Ukrainians are defending their homes and have a wide latitude on how to take or hold positions. It isn’t necessary for a senior commander to be on the front lines. (Also, it’s likely Ukraine has better operational security.)
Here’s an interesting video on the subject.

Shush, don’t you know this is a psy-op war? It’s like a house of cards. It looks nice until it all comes tumbling down. Sorry to say there’s no Ukraine offensive in the cards.
