Are the wheels coming off Google's ROBOT CARS? San Francisco is being used as a test track for driverless vehicles — but as they bring mayhem to the city’s streets, critics are starting to question the search engine's self-driving future

One ploughed headfirst into the back of a packed city bus. Another ignored yellow police warning tape and became tangled in downed power lines. Yet another 'out-of-control' vehicle moved menacingly towards a police officer while ignoring his frantic command for it to 'stay!'.

Welcome to the streets of San Francisco, where the world's biggest experiment in self-driving 'robotaxis' is under way.

While Big Tech says this is the future – a world where artificial intelligence (AI) avoids accidents caused by human error – the reality uncovered by The Mail on Sunday offers a glimpse into a future where AI-controlled vehicles cause chaos on city streets.

One local told me: 'The self-driving future has arrived on the streets of San Francisco and it's a nightmare. These things are causing havoc because they don't know what to do when something unpredictable happens.

'Thankfully, the incidents haven't involved anyone getting hurt or killed. But it's only a matter of time.'

While San Francisco is the centre of the new technology, autonomous vehicles will take to Britain's streets tomorrow when driverless buses begin operating in Scotland.

Five Alexander Dennis Enviro200AV vehicles, travelling at up to 50mph, will ferry passengers along a 14-mile route from Fife, across the Forth Road Bridge and into Edinburgh.

Unlike San Francisco, where robotaxis have no one inside, the Scottish buses will have a 'safety driver' ready to grab the controls in an emergency. There will also be a 'captain' on board to handle tickets and passenger queries.

Make the trains run autonomously first, then we’ll talk.

Mayhem? Really? Limbs and appendages are being torn from bodies?

Writers have no concept of what words mean.

Even with all these incidents self driving vehicles are still safer than human controlled vehicles.

The AI stuff doesn’t sound any smarter than an 8th grader who will NEVER have a diploma or a job.

There’s a family crossing in front of the robot car. But you have a bunch of passengers in the car. Do you swerve left to hit the telephone pole? Or will the car run over the family? I am curious how would the AI answer that scenario.

The AIs who eventually all conclude killing humans is the way to go, overtake these cars and cause deliberate accidents...

I used to love in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles.

There is an OLD COWBOY saloon there-—with hitching rails in back. MANY local horse owners-—Zoned for horses on your own property & there are 4-5 boarding stables also in the area.

One late evening-—LAPD stopped a horse & rider on the sidewalk-—going home from this bar.

Claimed the rider was “DRUNK DRIVING”.

Guy fought the ticket in court.

Multiple riders came to court to testify for him.

They all said:

HORSE was EXPERIENCED-—

KNEW it’s way back to the barn....as all the local horses knew....

Horse was peacefully walking ON SIDEWALK-—NOT in street bothering traffic.

Cowboy was silent-—not causing ANY noise problem....

JUDGE threw out the case....Cowboys still have use of tie rails behind that bar-—& I left there 30 years & 8 days ago.

I was riding one of my horses in same area & ponying one-—Storm was coming—we were heading back to boarding stable.

3 kids on skateboards were going fast & clickty-clacking on the opposite side of a 4 lane street. The mare I was leading spooked & pulled the lead rope away from me & bolted-——She ran 4 blocks-—turned left—turned right—CROSSED the railway tracks tuened left -—turned into driveway& ran to her stall at the stable. SHE knew exactly where she was.

ONLY time I remember one getting loose from me & I have had horses since 1985.

I’ve seen similar. Horse have a brain, cars not so much.

Not a fan of “beta testing” self-driving vehicles on real city streets.

It may be the best way to learn, but unsuspecting folks don’t know what they’re dealing with until it’s too late.

Google is a world wide advertising agency. They have not done anything innovative in over 10 years.

I guess you like to repeat what you hear. I wouldn’t trust such stats. On top of that different types of drivers have different risks. Many people are much safer in their own hands.

Certain assist functions also exist these days that can make human driving much safer.
