Broome County executive to issue order banning hotels from accepting asylum seekers [NY]

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar will announce an executive order meant to ban lodging establishments from accepting asylum seekers on behalf of New York City, WSKG has confirmed.

The announcement will bring Broome County in line with other counties including Orange, Rockland and Rensselaer, in issuing orders meant to prevent New York City from signing contracts with hotels to house asylum seekers in recent days.

This comes as the U.S. braces for a major wave of asylum seekers to enter the country, as the federal COVID-19 emergency expires at midnight Thursday, and with it, Title 42, a Trump-era policy allowing migrants to be returned to Mexico once detained.

New York City has been challenged in providing emergency assistance to hundreds of displaced asylum seekers. A memo obtained by CBS2 shows that city officials anticipate as many as 800 asylum seekers to arrive per day after the expiration of Title 42.

Multiple sources familiar with Broome County government operations confirmed that Garnar would issue the executive order Thursday, modeled after one issued by Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus on Monday. That order bans hotels, motels and other short-term rentals from entering into a contract with municipal governments, such as New York City, for the purpose of housing asylum seekers.

Garnar is set to announce specifics of the order in a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Despite Orange County’s order, a bus of asylum seekers arrived in Newburgh Thursday, drawing into question just how effective executive action will be in preventing New York City from moving the migrants.

“... it’s almost impossible to keep them out if there’s no previous record.”

And I know you understand how difficult it is to understand the laws if they are literally changed in midstream like horses. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see how government can over rule the law at a whim. I don’t feel they should even be there, but I can’t make the call on that one either.

“...absurd notions can prevail in leftist courts.”

And what makes it even worse is I can almost promise you the people being effected by this stampede of destitute, uneducated, cattle crashing across the border don’t want their business because there is no control over the living standards they will attack on the buildings, amenities, motel breakfast areas, local businesses like restaurants, clothing stores, parks, and the people living there along with theft, violence, and drug use. And someone is going to get hurt or killed. This is a true lose/lose.

I don’t think they can usurp the property usage established for private owners

That's a different question and probably the main one--how far can a county executive in an order based on a declared state of emergency, and who can override them. Anyways, if as the article suggests the order is along the lines of those of other counties, the ban referred to is on hotels contracting with NYC for the arrangements.

“Asylum seekers”

And they all can prove police persecution with the same x-ray of Wang Bu Chu's broken arm provided by Disgrace Yu for $25.

“...a declared state of emergency...”

OOOOOOO, what you said. The administrations of both Obama and Biden, and all the little people of congress, have tried so hard to make this a normalcy that it seems to over ride all sanity.

If the president can’t consider this even the slightest emergency when it would have to be considered an invasion, whether they have guns or not, then how can the states of Texas, Arizona, California, and New Mexico determine it an emergency on the ground? The feds, who really are the overseers of the borders, are treating this like a visiting uncle and family moving to a state and just opening up shop with all the privileges of the natural born.

And this is why I mentioned the legality of closing the doors to people based upon country of origin when the feds are treating it like state of origin. This will make for an interesting argument that will have to be seen in the SCOTUS as it involves international determination. I can’t wait for it to get there because if they determine it an insurgency or an invasion will be the key to closing the borders except to those that fit the template established within the rules of entry.

This is being ignored.

Contrary to what the leftists hope, claim, or insinuate, a nation’s control over its borders is plenary, and there can be a disaster in a state regardless of the federal government or even because of it. It all depends on resolve.

“... a nation’s control over its borders is plenary...”

But if the states cannot be allowed to participate in the action with federal laws or executive orders standing in their way, and the feds not taking an honest active part, then you have no coverage at all. Without the federal government taking the active lead in the protection, and placing an over run group like the understaffed border control that are little more than running checkpoints and processing people they can’t stop, you might as well put everyone on unemployment with government bennies to include the illegals that are on their way to them now. The states aren’t allowed to do it themselves, and the feds won’t.

As of April 23, there were 24,944 immigrants actually being detained in 5 states. According to the NY Post, over 90K illegals crossed the border over the last 10 days alone. The total national guard assigned in the southern states starting from Louisiana to the Pacific is 63,521. The total active duty personnel for the five armed service is approximately 472,000. And that number contains those assigned to posts anywhere in the world. So available is a lot less. (Actual number sensitive)

A report, released by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) of Syracuse University, found nearly 60,000 people were denied entry at U.S. ports in February — the most of any month since 2012. Over the past decade, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have deemed 3 million individuals “inadmissible” at U.S. ports, but of those only 1 million were refused entry into the United States, according to the new report. You can’t do nothing to get something done in this case. And by not taking more than a nominal part in the problem is doing less than nothing as it gets people hurt or killed.

The states aren’t allowed to do it themselves

Not my claim. And nor should any state/local resources and businesses be commandeered by other state/local government or even the fed to facilitate processing "immigration".

“Not my claim”

Didn’t say it was. But for the protection of the country, and especially their state, governors and local law enforcement are having to get more and more into the mix due to the local problems which is what started the thread. It’s just a fact and is obvious by who is taking the action to do the banning, a county executive because the feds tie their own hands and rewrite the laws.

As for asylum seekers, they are not looking for asylum, they are looking for handouts. For those standing in Mexico right now trying to get here, they are in an asylum country. So why aren’t they seeking it there? And the trade off is that they are being allowed in illegally by a single group to make them happy so they will vote for them. The liberals are creating a bigger voting base by spending taxpayer money to subsidize illegals. They have no other use for them as they have no other purpose. Pretty obvious.

do the banning

Control of immigration and border differs from managing conditions that arise from those being left open or actions to prevent other cities, themselves also lacking immigration authority, from redistributing the swarms to your county.

Not that I expect leftists to cooperate or that the county can do much if its orders are not heeded.
