We are a nation of immigrants, but for much of our history we chose whom to let in; we didn’t let in anyone who showed up. Immigrants were required to pass health exams, were screened for extreme political views and had to show that they would not be a burden on the American taxpayer.
I don’t blame people for wanting to come here and be a part of the opportunities that America offers. But somehow the idea that we get to select those who come here has apparently vanished.
