I wish these stories would tell how it happened. Almost always someone clicking the attachment on a dodgy email. Sometimes through an infected flash drive brought from outside. Knowing how it happened would be a good education for the readers to help them be on guard

The backup drives are only good for a certain number of years. They start developing issues over time. If you don’t replace them they can become unreliable.

Unfortunately ransomware is usually an advanced persistent threat. They seed the encryption weeks even months in advance. Most backups would be compromised as well.
