Why did Putin in Dec 2021 demand NATO withdraw from much of eastern Europe, including Poland, the former Soviet countries of Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and the Balkan countries? Was he fearing a NATO attack spearheaded from Estonia? No, this was all about Russia regaining hegemony over major parts of the former Soviet Union. Remember, it was Russian President Vladimir Putin who said that the collapse of the Soviet empire “was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century”

The US has repeatedly broke its promise to not expand NATO “one inch further east” long before Putin decided to respond in kind.
